Baja Day 8

The morning sees us at La Paz Bay, one of the few places in the world where whale sharks are to be found reliably for large parts of the year. These slow moving filter feeders provide a photography challenge as they stay below the water all of the time so our shots are rather limited in quality. However, getting close to these creatures in the wild was indeed a privilege.

Many people go snorkelling and although a little intrusive, this did seem to be moderately well managed, although the number of boats may be a concern for the longer term.

After the morning in La Paz Bay, our boat headed further into the Sea of Cortez in search of more wildlife. A small pod of bottlenose dolphins played for a while and a small turtle swam by.

The real highlight though was finding a large group of Munk's mobula rays (sometimes called devil rays)- these are known to gather in large shoals in Baja and having done so, at random intervals, will jump into the air - the photography is challenging and most images are just splashes!

However, every now and then you get one right.

In the crystal blue water of the Sea of Cortez, sometimes the images look unbelievable.

Another perfect sunset finished the day.
