Costa Rica
There are some countries in the world that you just want to go back to again and again. For us, Costa Rica is just a magnificent wildlife experience, and with direct flights available from London, much easier than many other Central American destinations. For this trip we created a custom itinerary with Greg Basco managing the ground arrangements. Our driver/guide provided one set of high-speed flash equipment and we carried more of our own, enabling us both to shoot at the same time when the opportunity arose.
After a long flight into the country, the Hotel Bougainvillea is often a preferred starting point as the spacious gardens often offer bird and flower photography options.
The following day saw us head north to an area close to the border with Nicaragua - La Laguna del Lagarto lodge. Here there were a variety of shooting opportunities for forest birds that would come in to the extensive bamboo feeders, as well as giving us our first snakes of the trip and the chance to dabble with high-speed flash photography.
At this lodge the shooting continued after dark as nectar bats would come in to feed from a variety of flowering plants.
We then headed to Arenal, the site of a currently quiet volcano and a renowned collection of frogs and snakes.
